Order of the Seven Confederate Knights Commemorative Medals
A History of the Badge of the Seven Knights: The Order of the Seven Knights of the Confederacy was created in 1863 at Rock Island Union Prison by seven Confederate soldiers as one means of combating desertions among their fellow prisoners. Its members took an oath to stand by each other under all circumstances and to die in prison rather than give in to pressure by their captors to take the oath of allegiance to the Union and join the armed forces of the United States. This oath was to be binding so long as the Confederate government was in existence. The oath spoke to the behavior of these prisoners of war in the absence of a formal code of conduct for POWs such as we have today.
The original badges were made of pearl, bone, or rubber highly polished. The device was a star with seven points, and their motto was "Dulce et decorum est pro patna mon," which means, "It is sweet and glorious to die for one's county." The initial letter of each of these Latin words is in each point of the star. In the center of the star was a shield on which the emblematic letters "C.K." and the figure "7".
Our camp is selling a medal commemorating this badge. It is mounted on a ribbon and sells for $16, which includes the cost of shipping. You also receive a certificate describing the badge. These are very attractive and suitable for SCV, Re-enactments or other Organizational Events.

Inside of Rock Island Prison book
In 1908, J.W. Minnich, wrote a short history of the terrible conditions he endured while a prisoner at the Rock Island (Arsenal Island) Prisoner of War Camp from December of 1863 to June of 1865. In this volume he describes the often inhumane experiences he and his fellow Confederate POWs suffered at the hands of the Union Authorities who ran the Prison. The Iowa Division Sons of Confederate Veterans has republished this volume along with a list of the known Confederate Prisoners who died while at Rock Island POW Camp. In addition, a partial listing of some of the nearly 19,000, Confederate POWs is included in this book. This book is clearly an important addition to the library of every member of the SCV and anyone interested in the War Between the States. This book contains the original work by Minnich, an introductory section, a listing of the Confederates who died while in the prison camp, and a partial listing of some of the POWs, can be obtained for $15.
